Are you sure it’s actually NBN calling?

I’m pretty sure that Zeke was being humorous. You’re right – it’s not NBN calling. Nor is it Microsoft, or Optus or Telstra despite what they say. If anyone ever gets a call purporting to be from a business, just randomly offering free help to you, immediately ask yourself the question “And just how does this business unit justify their staffing costs when they’re apparently calling me to offer their free labour?” Then hang up, because any of the above offering a free service is a ridiculous concept. (And I’m aware of how unlikely it would be for anyone reading this to be taken in by these scammers, but many of us have less discerning parents and other relatives.)

My question is how they manage to select their targets. I’m a former IT professional, and nobody has ever phoned me offering to fix my virus issues. I’m missing out – I could do with a good laugh!

Why do the NBN people keep ringing me and telling me that there’s suspicious activity on my internet connection?

Which explains Michael Smith’s complaint about how difficult it is to get them to answer a Help Desk call. Obviously all their operatives are busy cold-calling customers to offer them help with their suspicious activity problems!

Mystery solved…

So glad I don’t have one of those white boxes. My boss has one, plus the extra box to connect it to. Same with my son having his connection in his flat. Two boxes and a cheap lap table sitting on the floor beneath the phone cable connection just so the boxes aren’t sitting on the floor in a spot they’re likely to get kicked.

We only ever recieved our modem/router from the ISP. One box only, sent to us by our ISP once we were ‘NBN ready’. We recently replaced it with a new router/modem after we started having problems and that was purchased only after speaking to a friend in IT who recommended a particular one. I ordered it online, it arrived in the mail and I set it up myself (since my husband isn’t all that technogically inclined). It’s working great.

Don’t be. Finding a spot for two boxes is a pain in the backside. I’m glad I’ve only got one box, and it’s one I purchased to replace the one box we were provided with by our ISP when the NBN was installed.

It is “NBN compatible” in that it can directly terminate fibre-to-the-node and fibre-to-the-building VDSL connections (FTTN and FTTB), and may have been supplied by an ISP. The ISPs always sell or give these to their users – they don’t expect them to stay around.

Are you sure it’s actually NBN calling?

Do you use a VPN, perhaps?

All I’ve got is the old copper wire and a router. I feel cheated.

Until this happens I dont think anyone should take the slightest bit of notice of anything NBN Co wants.

Maybe they are programmed for the immediate vicinity rather than by particular property?
